Public Awareness Toolkit
Working toward solutions for entrenched societal problems can be daunting. Individuals who want to make a difference often find it difficult to know where to start or what to do. Scenario #1: Two major obstacles to attendance were revealed through our interviews: scheduling and transportation. Fifteen parents reported that no convenient transportation choices were available to them. The following statement from a mother of twins is typical of the comments we heard: “I appreciate it that you gave me the bus tokens, but walking six blocks to the bus stop with two kids in a stroller –kids who are way overdue for a nap—just made it too hard. I love the program and everything, but it’s too hard to get there. And gas money won’t help either—my car doesn’t run half the time.”
Other parents expressed frustration with scheduling. One of the single fathers told us, “I have to work and every other week I’m on swing shift. You guys are great—the class really helped me when I could go—but can’t you have classes on weekends?”
Staff are reviewing the schedule to see if adjustments can be made to accommodate more parents. In addition, we are exploring the possibility of working with the school district to use their busses and drivers to help transport families.”
