Positive Youth Development

The theory and practice behind positive youth development as a service tool is well defined. Understanding the value and strengths that a youth brings to a case are an invaluable asset and tool. These skills can be applied in prevention programs by applying the principles to working with pregnant or parenting teens, families with adolescents, and programs that target youth.

Positive youth development can be defined as the process which prepares a youth to identify and successfully complete the challenges of adolescence and adulthood. This effort is achieved by working with a service array to offer a coordinated, progressive series of activities and experiences which help them to become socially, morally, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent. Positive youth development is about addressing all of the needs for that youth, not just the problems that arise.

Positive youth development is a key component to many CBCAP funded prevention efforts by offering services to young parents, pregnant teens, and at-risk youth. This area is of growing concern and programs are beginning to focus real time and effort towards moving to the strength based model promoted under positive youth development.
